Amherst Pelham Regional School Budget Four Town Meeting Saturday, March 25 at 9am High School Library Please join the Regional School Committee, Shutesbury, Leverett, Pelham and Amherst town officials, and state legislators at a meeting to discuss the proposed level of funding for our shared schools, grades 7 - 12. The situation is grave at the regional schools. We have settled the assessment formula discussions and now need to address the proposed cuts. The original request was to cut $1.58 million. The most recent proposal is to cut $1.9 million to what was already a level service budget. The list of proposed program and position cuts can be found in detail at: www.arps.org/budgetinformation/ For many years all 4 of the communities strived to provide an above average education for our children. We passed overrides, and spent free cash in the absence of state funding. Most recently the region has suffered 4 years of level funded Chapter 70 funds. We are now faced with significant layoffs if we cannot figure something out. Each town faces its own financial dilemmas. The problem of funding education goes beyond our schools. Governor Romney stated at the Annual Mass Municipal Association Meeting that he understands that increases in local property taxes have made up the difference for cuts in state aid to municipalities for FY 07. His proposed increases to the municipalities, does not make up for the level funding of the last four years nor such unfunded mandates as MCAS testing, special education, and No Child Left Behind. We invite you to share your concerns and suggestions. Please write them down and drop them off at Town Hall, mail them in care of the Shutesbury Select Board P.O. Box 276, Shutesbury. Or email them to townadmin@shutesbury.org. Let's start the discussion today so we can focus on problem solving on March 25. Thanks for your advance input. The purpose of the Shutesbury Energy Committee is to study and recommend energy conservation policies and projects to the Select Board. The Energy Committee will discuss their reasoning that has led them to propose the installation of a 10 kW wind turbine behind Town Hall. They have identified state incentives that combine with our town's natural wind resource to produce an economical green energy alternative. We hope to explore the implications of this project and address some of the common concerns often raised about such an installation. Full proposal, with all attachments, can be viewed at Town Hall, but we also hope you can make this informational meeting.
