Upcoming Events:
Sunday, April 7, at 11 AM. Come fly a kite on the Town Common! The Recreation Committee is sponsoring, in collaboration with the library, a celebration of the eclipse with crafts and kite flying. Please bring a kite if you have one, and if not, we will have kites.
Sunday, June 30. The Recreation Committee is pleased to be a sponsor of an Artist Studio Tour. Organized by Joan Green, the tour will give visitors an opportunity to visit local studios, talk to the artists, and become familiar with their work. It will provide a wonderful celebration of our local artists.
TBD. In keeping with our celebration of the eclipse, the Recreation Committee in collaboration with the library will be offering two evenings of star gazing led by Tom Schieding.
TBD. Also in collaboration with the library, the following activities are planned:
- A mushroom growing workshop that will give participants the information they need to decide if mushroom growing is for them. This event will likely be held end of April or early May.
- A bird watching event in mid-May to correspond with peak bird migration
TBD. The Recreation Committee in collaboration with the Open Space Committee is sponsoring two walks at Ames Pond. This property, bequeathed to the Kestrel Land Trust by Julian Janowitz, is an extraordinary landscape of wetlands and forest. The first walk, led by Graeme Sephton, was a great success. Graeme shared his knowledge about the trails and the history and flora and fauna of the area. The Kestrel Land Trust is currently repairing and replacing the boardwalks. Our second walk will return to Ames Pond when that work is done, anticipated for May into June.
As soon as dates are determined this will be updated.
The Recreation Committee purpose:
The Recreation Committee develops recreational activities designed to build community and enrich the quality of life in Shutesbury. The Committee sponsors and supports recreational experiences and related educational programming for all age groups.
Are you interested in becoming a member of the Recreation Committee?
The Recreation Committee is looking for new members, and would especially benefit from members interested in bringing new ideas and energy to two areas:
First, supporting and adding to programs for children and their families - such as our annual Family Field Day.
Second, working on the Community Garden, which has approval to be sited near the new library. In addition to helping establish the garden, this work will include developing workshops on practices, such as sustainable farming techniques, that people can use as they plan their gardens.
